Laboratory of Thrombosis and Cancer, Institute of Medical Biochemistry, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil
Dr. Monteiro is the Head of the Laboratory of Thrombosis and Cancer at Institute of Medical Biochemistry at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil. Robson Monteiro graduate in Pharmacy at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1993). His Master's (1997) and Ph.D. (2001) in Biological Chemistry were developed at the same University. During his Ph.D., Robson spent some months at the Unite des Venins (Pasteur Institute, Paris, France,1997) and at the Instituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri (Consorzio Mario Negri Sud, Sta Maria Imbaro, Italy, 1997). Dr. Monteiro entered the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro as Assistant Professor in 2002. In 2004, Robson worked at National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (National Institutes of Health, Rockville, USA) under the supervision of Dr. Jose Marcos Chaves Ribeiro and Dr. Ivo Mauricio Barbosa Francischetti. Dr. Monteiro’s research group focuses on pathological processes with strong interface with blood clotting enzymes and protease receptors (PAR – Protease Activated Receptors), including cancer and thrombosis. His group also studies new exogenous antithrombotic molecules aiming to develop alternative antitumor/antiangiogenic therapies. More recently, his group became interested in studying the role of immune cells, mostly neutrophils, in the establishment of cancer-associated thrombosis.
